We are here for one another.

Where this comes from
Marcus Aurelius wrote this in his private notebook about 1,850 years ago. People are here for each other, he reminded himself, so when someone gets it wrong, teach them, or bear with them.
How you could say it to a five-year-old
“Your friend’s zipper is stuck. You can ask, ‘Want some help?’”
Marcus Aurelius, Meditations 8.59. We put these lines into plain English ourselves, staying close to the original and to public-domain translations.
A story to read together

A book for the two of youThe Calm EmperorMore on being a good person
Don’t talk about what a good person is. Be one.
The best revenge is not to become like them.
Look within. The good is there, if you keep digging.
You don’t have ten thousand years. Be good while you can.
If someone shows me I’m wrong, I will gladly change.
What Marcus Aurelius told himself, for your 5-year-old
